Australian Government Tracks Every Aud Conversion Into Bitcoin

Australian government tracks every AUD conversion into bitcoin The Australian government's anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing arm knows of each conversion from Australian dollars into bitcoins, and vice versa. The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (Austrac), the Australian government agency responsible for countering money laundering and the financing of terrorism, is able to track each conversion transaction from bitcoin into or out of Australian dollars. "Australia is very fortunate among its international counterparts, in that we are one of the few countries which currently collects all international funds transfers, into or out of Australia," John Schmidt, CEO of Austrac, told Senate Estimates today. "At some point, a person will be purchasing bitcoin using Australian dollars, for example, and then, if they are dealing in substances or services, will want to convert those bitcoins back into the legitimate currencies of wherever they are, so they can gain the benefit of them. "Because we get the international funds transfers instructions, it is possible using other intelligence sources to identify transactions where people are purchasing bitcoins." Schmidt said that most other countries do not possess the same capability as Australia, and prosecutions have already resulted from the agency's intelligence. "Using intelligence which came into our possession, we were able to monitor the transactions of the conversion, the international funds transfer of Australian dollars to convert into bitcoins, which were then linked to drug shipments," he said. The CEO said bitcoin is interesting, but from his perspective it is, in essence, merely a commodity used to transfer value. "You can use gold and other things to transfer value." "But at so Continue reading >>

Australian Government Tracks All Bitcoin To Aud Conversions

Australian Government Tracks All Bitcoin To Aud Conversions

Australian Government Tracks All Bitcoin to AUD Conversions The Australian government is keeping a close eye on bitcoin, but not on the regulatory front. Rather, it is tracking every conversion from bitcoin into Australian dollars , and vice-versa. The government agency doing the snooping is the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre ( Austrac ). The centre is tasked with countering money laundering and terrorist finance, so it is only logical that it would track anonymous transactions. Austrac CEO John Schmidt told lawmakers that Australia collects data on all international fund transfers, including bitcoin conversions, ZDnet reports . "At some point, a person will be purchasing bitcoin using Australian dollars, for example, and then if they are dealing in substances or services, will want to convert those bitcoins back into the legitimate currencies of where ever they are, so they can gain the benefit of them. This is where it gets interesting. Because the centre gets international transfer instructions, it is possible to identify transactions made by people purchasing bitcoins. Schmidt added that most countries have the same capability as Australia, but it is unclear whether they use it. He added that some prosecutions have already resulted from intelligence collected by the centre. The CEO argued that bitcoin is a commodity used to transfer value rather than a legitimate currency. When bitcoins are converted into AUD, Austrac can identify those transactions. Schmidtalso issued a warning that if bitcoin gains more independence from fiat currency it will become more attractive to criminal organizations that need to channel money around. In that case, international cooperation will be necessary, as Schmidt points out: "Because they will operate on servers Continue reading >>

Is It Too Late To Invest In Bitcoin?

Is It Too Late To Invest In Bitcoin?

25/08/2017 7:33 PM AEST | Updated 25/08/2017 7:33 PM AEST For those wondering if they've missed the money-making boat. Meet Bitcoin: the digital currency on everyone's lips. For non-financey types, the concept of Bitcoin can be daunting. Just when we were wrapping our heads around variable interest rates and term deposits, they go and create a whole new digital currency. Whatever happened to shoving all your money under your mattress and calling it a day? But with or without our approval, Bitcoin has become a thing, and for those who jumped on it early, a very profitable one. At the time of writing this article, a single bitcoin was worth just over $5162 AUD according to XE currency converter, while CoinSpot listed the price per bitcoin as $5550.00 AUD. To give you an idea of how far it's come, in 2010 the bitcoin price was about 1.5 US cents. Let's all spare a moment for the guy who bought $25 worth, threw away his hard drive and then realised as of this month he essentially threw out $7.6 million. Ouch. But what about the (relative) latecomers to the Bitcoin train? Have we missed out? First of all, let's start with the basics. As defined by CoinDesk , "Bitcoin is a form of digital currency, created and held electronically. No one controls it. Bitcoins aren't printed, like dollars or euros -- they're produced by people , and increasingly businesses, running computers all around the world, using software that solves mathematical problems." Bitcoin is traded digitally, but that's not what's new or exciting about it. Where it stands apart is due to the fact it's decentralised, meaning it isn't controlled by any one institution. Instead, it relies on a peer-to-peer structure, by a community of people that anyone can join. These peoples are called 'miners' and they use com Continue reading >>
