Github - Butor/blackbird: Blackbird Bitcoin Arbitrage: A Long/short Market-neutral Strategy

Blackbird Bitcoin Arbitrage is a C++ trading system that does automatic long/short arbitrage between Bitcoin exchanges. Bitcoin is still a new and inefficient market. Several Bitcoin exchanges exist around the world and the bid/ask prices they propose can be briefly different from an exchange to another. The purpose of Blackbird is to automatically profit from these temporary price differences while being market-neutral. Here is a real example where an arbitrage opportunity exists between Bitstamp (long) and Bitfinex (short): At the first vertical line, the spread between the exchanges is high so Blackbird buys Bitstamp and short sells Bitfinex. Then, when the spread closes (second vertical line), Blackbird exits the market by selling Bitstamp and buying Bitfinex back. Unlike other Bitcoin arbitrage systems, Blackbird doesn't sell but actually short sells Bitcoin on the short exchange. This feature offers two important advantages: The strategy is always market-neutral: the Bitcoin market's moves (up or down) don't impact the strategy returns. This removes a huge risk from the strategy. The Bitcoin market could suddenly lose twice its value that this won't make any difference in the strategy returns. The strategy doesn't need to transfer funds (USD or BTC) between Bitcoin exchanges. The buy/sell and sell/buy trading activities are done in parallel on two different exchanges, independently. Advantage: no need to deal with transfer latency issues. More details about short selling and market neutrality can be found on issue #100 . USE THE SOFTWARE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Why Bitcoin Arbitrage Is Not Very Profitable

Why Bitcoin Arbitrage Is Not Very Profitable

Why Bitcoin arbitrage is not very profitable Why Bitcoin arbitrage is not very profitable November 3, 2014 Investing & Trading 12 Comments Last month the owner of Bitcoin arbitrage service Bitcoin Trader, John Carley, suddenly announced the service would be closed down, after which he disappeared into the ether. The service was likely set up as a Ponzi scheme rather than a real arbitrage service, but managed to operate for months despite consistently posting totally unrealistic trading results . With the trading results at about 15 to 20 percent per month, a $10,000 investment would grow to nearly half a million in just two years time at this rate, and this does not even include the mining income. The consistency of the returns was the first red flag, as even the performance of the most stable asset fluctuates. Overly consistent returns are typical for Ponzi schemes and a sign of possible investment scams in general. The reason the service got away with the previous is that it claimed to earn its income via a strategy called arbitrage, which was portrayed as a safe way of generating income by taking advantage of price differences of a single cryptocurrency at two exchanges. But even though prices will indeed differ across various exchanges, and even though real arbitrage is indeed a relatively safe strategy, the second red flag should have been the height of the returns in relation to the applied strategy. The general principle is that risk and reward are related , and high returns do not come without high risk. At the same time, pure arbitrage is completely risk free in theory. So how does this mix with the results reported by Bitcoin Trader? The short answer is: it does not. To get a better understanding, consider the definition of arbitrage : The simultaneous purcha Continue reading >>

Running Bitcoin Arbitrage Using Blackbird

Running Bitcoin Arbitrage Using Blackbird

Running Bitcoin Arbitrage using Blackbird My efforts to use an arbitrage trading bot went bust. It was fun to look through though and I appreciate Butor very much for sitting me down and helping me fine tune things. this was a valuable lesson not only in bots but in the way opportunities are found. In the 5 weeks I had the bot running I maybe entered into two trades and I closed the bot on the 1st one as I had typed cat and not tail to keep the output going. The 2nd time it was running I realized that there was about to be a trend reversal and I would rather just keep the money as all bitcoin if I can. I think Instead I would like to use coinapult as a rudimentary strategy so that in times of collapse I could hammer that address with bitcoin and hedge against bitcoin value (of course I wont bother doing that so much if Im holding onto cash. As it stands Ive been living on coin for several years now so I do have fiat but only to cover services that refuse to take coin such as Living and Gas and Groceries. (sadly). Well back to the topic. Ive known of bot trading since I was working with cryptsy, but a good close python proficient expert friend of mine had shown me that bot trading was not only risky but could be gamed to you lose morey from other hostile traders and that you may be burning yourself in fees if the spread is not present or is unaccounted for or if there is constant slippage as you have no shorting opportunities for alt-coins (that I am aware of). I decided to give this C++ Arbitrage bot a little go ahead because Im interested in C++ and ultimately bitcoin development overall. Blackbird is the name of the software and it is available on Github. I found it easy to use and implement. There were very few dependencies but those are simply a matter of following Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Arbitrage Opportunities: A Short Guide

Bitcoin Arbitrage Opportunities: A Short Guide

Last updated on May 23rd, 2017 at 03:08 am Bitcoin arbitrage is the buying of bitcoins on an exchange where the price is very low and selling it at an exchange where the price is relatively higher. The prices of Bitcoin vary on various exchanges, due to the fact that the markets are not directly linked, and the trading volume,on many exchanges, is low enough that the price does not adjust to the average right away. Here a great video by Andreas Antonopoulos about why these arbitrage opportunities even exist: A Simplified Example of a Bitcoin Arbitrage Opportunity The price of Bitcoin on Coinbase is $650 and the price of Bitcoin on BTC-E is $636, the difference between the prices is $14, and this is quite a decent opportunity forarbitraging. Lets say, you buy 100 bitcoins on BTC-E at the rate of $636 each and subsequently, you sell them at Coinbase at the rate of $650 each, you make $14 per Bitcoin. Lets get down to the math Price of each Bitcoin = $636 Total price = $636 * 100 = $63,600 Number of Bitcoins sold in Coinbase = 100 Price of each Bitcoin = $650 Total = $650 * 100 = $65,000 Total profit = $65,000 $63,600= $1,400 Thus, you can see that Bitcoin arbitrage seems like a wonderful opportunity to make some passive income, but there are afew barriers to it. The time it takes to verify each of the transactions (buying and selling) can add up and the exchange rate might change within that timeframe. Many exchanges require a lot of verifications in order to trade a large number of Bitcoins. Depositing fiat currency can be a time taking process (can take up to 10 days depending on your payment method). Many exchanges have fees, which I have overlooked in the given example, that you should take into account. Pay attention to the transaction volume on each exchange as you Continue reading >>

Hacking A Hft System

Hacking A Hft System

Compared with machine learning or signal processing algorithms of conventional trading strategies, High Frequency Trading systems can be surprisingly simple. They need not attempt to predict future prices. They know the future prices already. Or rather, they know the prices that lie in the future for other, slower market participants. Recently we got some contracts for simulating HFT systems in order to determine their potential profit and maximum latency. This article is about testing HFT systems the hackers way. The HFT advantage is receiving price quotes earlier and getting orders filled faster than the majority of market participants. Its profit depends on the systems latency, the delay between price quote and subsequent order execution at the exchange. Latency is the most relevant factor of a HFT system. It can be optimized in two ways: by minimizing the distance to the exchange, and by maximizing the speed of the trading system. The former is more important than the latter. Ideally, a HFT server is located directly at the exchange. And indeed most exchanges are dear selling server space in their cellars the closer to the main network hub, the dearer the space. Electrical signals in a shielded wire travel with about 0.7 .. 0.9 times the speed of light (300 km/ms). 1 m closer to the signal source means a whopping 8 nanoseconds round-trip time advantage. How many trade opportunities disappear after 8ns? I dont know, but people are willing to pay for any saved nanosecond. Unfortunately (or fortunately, from a cost perspective), the HFT system that well examine here can not draw advantage from colocating at the exchange. For reasons that well see soon, it must trade and receive quotes from the NYSE and the CME simultaneously. Theres a high speed cable and also a micro Continue reading >>

Cryptocurrency exchanges are the convenient gateway to buying and selling bitcoin and other cryptos. As one would expect, these exchanges also create arbitrage opportunities. Taking advantage of these gaps between bitcoin prices can be quite difficult, especially when things need to be done manually. Thankfully, there are some bitcoin arbitrage bots which facilitate the process somewhat. The Crypto Arbitrage Trader bot should not be confused with C.A.T, which is a closed-source paid trading bot for cryptocurrency users. Crypto Arbitrage Traders source code can be found on GitHub . The project was initially announced in 2013 and includes support for Coins-E, BTC-E, and Vircurex. However, no major updates have occurred over the past four years, and some users complained there are a few bugs in the code. This particular bitcoin arbitrage bot can be used for different purposes, although it appears only one exchange is supported at this time. BTC-E is a somewhat popular trading platform, yet there is not always an arbitrage opportunity to take advantage of. tAPIbots source code is available on GitHub , thus allowing experienced users to implement support for other exchanges if they feel the need to do so. Bitcoin Dealer is another bitcoin arbitrage bot that can only be used for one particular exchange. In this case, that exchange is Bitstamp, which is far more popular compared to BTC-E. Bitcoin Dealer can be found on GitHub as well, although it appears the bot has not received any major developer updates for quite some time now. It is not hard to see the similarities between Bitcoin Arbitrage and Bitcoin Dealer. However, when it comes to exchanges, Bitcoin Arbitrage is more flexible, with support for Bitstamp, Paymium, and Coinbase. Using multiple exchanges increases the od Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Arbitrage On Github: ~2% Monthly Return, Market-neutral Long/short

Bitcoin arbitrage on GitHub: ~2% monthly return, market-neutral long/short I just released the C++ code of my Bitcoin exchange arbitrage system that generates a ~2% monthly return with a USD 2,000 exposure. I think you guys might be interested in seeing how arbitrage can work with Bitcoin exchanges. The full code is on the following GitHub page: . I tried to write a pretty complete Readme file that explains the arbitrage mechanism. It is also a good way to see how you can connect a C++ system to two Bitcoin exchanges (Bitfinex and OKCoin) using JSON and base64 encoding. Please let me know what you think. I will try to find C++ contributors that will be able to improve the code and connect to new exchanges. I hope it can help you understand and actually test how arbitrage between Bitcoin exchanges works. Here is a quick real life example where arbitrage can occur because of market inefficiency between Bitfinex and Bitstamp in November 2014 (between the two vertical gray lines): Blackbird on GitHub: For the moment the system can only connect to Bitfinex and OKCoin. The project is really work in progress but I think it's a good practical example to understand how arbitrage works. I'm currently looking for C++ developers to help me out with the project. I will also improve the documentation on how to test it "out of the box". Currently to use it you need to understand and edit a little bit the source code (work in progress I told you If you do want to test it, yes please try with a low amount of cash. I did all my testing with a $10.00 exposure. So please only put a low amount of money on your Bitfinex and OKCoin trading accounts. My monthly returns are surprisingly constant: between 1.7% and 2.3%. Of course I cannot guarantee these returns under any circumstances. My aver Continue reading >>

Blackbird: Bitcoin Arbitrage | Hacker News

Blackbird: Bitcoin Arbitrage | Hacker News

Two notes. First, as others have said, while the market may contain inefficiencies, they tend to close fast especially with a public solution. That said, this may be a good starting point for you to go nuts on for generation 2.0 so enjoy the code. Second, while I wont comment on this particular strategy, I want to note that many so-called arbitrage systems are actually sleeves for another important risk: liquidity. These strategies typically assume normal trading behavior and dont take into account that exchanges break during crisis events, the exact events (even if theyre rare black swans) which can leave you half in a trade and wearing massive exposure during extreme volatility. The analogy is picking up nickels before a bulldozer... use at your own risk. >I want to note that many so-called arbitrage systems are actually sleeves for another important risk: liquidity Very true, especially with altcoins. In my experience, big deltas have been results of things like withdrawal suspensions. I think that poster does explain how it happens. The exchanges tend to shut down or break during extreme volatility events. If one breaks and the other doesn't, you're half in the market. What if you can't sell your positions until after the price drops, but the other position doesn't exist to balance it out? With cryptocurrencies you also have other exchange risks, notably the risk an exchange is hacked or otherwise goes out of business. Imagine if you had been buying BTC on Coinbase and selling BTC on MtGox in 2013, making a great profit (on paper) through arbitrage, until MtGox tanked and all those profits were frozen. I thought it was pretty clear. In a high traffic scenario some exchanges break and your order doesn't go in. To profit from this system you need both orders to be po Continue reading >>
